Lobbying Tips & Training

Lobbying is simply an effort to win the support of legislators or other public officials for a position on a piece of specific legislation or a specific legislative proposal. Lobbying can be done by registered lobbyists, but personal lobby visits by people just like you are the most persuasive tool for affecting issues in the legislature.

Being prepared is the most important factor in successful lobbying. Here you will find information to educate you on the legislative process and basic etiquette when speaking with elected officials. You can use these tools for any contact with your legislators or public officials, including traveling to the Capitol on PROMO Equality Day every year.

PROMO is Missouri's statewide organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality through legislative action, electoral politics, grassroots organizing, and community education. We identify LGBT rights supporters, educate them on the issues, give them the tools and the confidence to participate in the political process, and get results. PROMO's goals are to help LGBT Missourians create a supportive and visible community, become active in the democratic process, and work for their equal protection under the law. We build community awareness and grassroots support for LGBT equality and increase civic participation of LGBT Missourians. PROMO is a 501(c)(4) organization.  PROMO Fund is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
