Say NO to Discrimination!
In the state of Missouri, it is legal to fire a person from their job, deny a person housing, or kick a person out of a public accomodation such as a restaurant because that person is or ir perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Everyday, someone in Missouri has to face this reality and learn that in this state it is indeed legal to discriminate based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
There are many different ways you can Take Action to ensure LGBT Equality in the State of Missouri. While it is still legal to discriminate in our state based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity, here are some ways you can Take Action on this issue and others:
Take Action! Support PROMO's priority proactive legislation, the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act. MONA would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in house, employment, and access to public accommodation.
Take Action! Sign the Say NO to Discrimination Petition to make your voice heard! This petition will be hand delivered to your State Representative and State Senator letting them know there are many people in their districts who want their elected officials to say no to discrimination in Missouri! Click here to sign the Say NO to Discrimination Petition.

YOU Made A Difference:
- "Tell the Springfield City Council to Remove the Unconsitutional Ordinance!" - 411 letters were sent by PROMO members to Springfield City Council urging them to repeal ordinance 78-224. As a direct result of your participation and the work of community members and PROMO staff on the ground, on September 8, 2009, the Springfield City Council removed ordinance 78-224 from local law. Ordinance 78-224 was an outdated, unconsitutional city law that made public same-sex flirting illegal! For more information on the repeal of Ordinance 78-224, read the PROMO Press Release!
- "Maine National Virtual Phone Bank" - On Sunday, September 27, 2009, thousands of phone calls were made on behalf of the Maine Freedom to Marry campaign to households across Maine- urging the citizens of Maine to Vote NO on 1- the Prop 8-style "citizens veto" to repeal marriage quality on the November ballot in that state. Volunteers from every state, including Missouri, participated in the virtual phone bank- right from our own homes. PROMO is proud to support the work of Maine Freedom to Marry to protect marriage equality! Stay tuned for more information on the outcome of the November decision.
