This is a very special message for you from PROMO’s Elizabeth Fuchs, Karis Agnew, and Mark Utterback.
This week marks Steph’s ten year anniversary at PROMO. He has a hard time bragging on how awesome that is and what that means to PROMO’s ability to win, so let us do that for him. Please show your support for Steph’s decade-long commitment to PROMO with your gift of $10 right now.
Ten years ago, Steph began his journey with PROMO as a part-time Regional Field Organizer in Springfield. He was in his last semester at Missouri State University, helping to lead the LGBTQ student group and organizing students, staff, and faculty on campus. Through mentorship of community leaders like PROMO’s former Executive Director A.J. Bockelman, Steph served in several roles at PROMO before becoming our E.D. and fearless leader. And Steph is not stopping now.
Ten years of this work doesn’t just bring experience, it brings expertise. It brings patience and the ability to build and see through a long-term strategy -- a skill PROMO is known for.
When I am working in the Capitol, Steph provides guidance of a seasoned leader, along with the institutional history that gives us that special edge. Ten years of this work is nearly one third of PROMO’s entire existence. Knowledge and context of that kind, coupled with Steph’s personal strategic style, allows our staff to know when to act, when to react, and when to strategically step back.
Ten years brings relationships with leaders in other states and at national organizations, giving PROMO access to some of the best research and resources as they become available.
My friends, trust me when I say that 10 years in this work is not easy. Steph’s sacrifices, both personally and professionally, are not to go unnoticed or unrecognized by any of us. He is our greatest equality champion, and we are a powerful force in Jefferson City because of his knowledge, leadership, and relationships. Steph lives, eats, sleeps, and breathes for you, for me, and for our entire LGBTQ Missouri family. Please join me in showing our gratitude with a gift of $10 for 10 years.
Manager of Public Policy, PROMO
A truly effective Executive Director of a smaller nonprofit must fulfill many roles. It takes leadership, wisdom, and flexibility to make an organization have real impact. This is especially true for an advocacy organization. Steph is that leader for PROMO. On any given day, Steph can be having conversations with local or state elected officials, meetings with donors and other key partners in our work, developing budgets, writing grant applications, or guiding and supporting his PROMO colleagues.
The PROMO Board of Directors is extremely grateful for Steph and his ability to build relationships, his talents, and his tireless commitment to PROMO’s mission. His leadership with staff, board members, and community partners allows us to cultivate impressive staff and dedicated supporters just like you.
Today, I encourage you to help us recognize Steph. He has dedicated that last 10 years of his life to protect our homes, our jobs, our marriages, and our families -- and he is still going strong! Please consider a gift of $10 or more to celebrate the accomplishments of Steph Perkins’ decade-long commitment to increasing the LGBTQ LOVE in Show-Me State.
Co-President, PROMO Board of Directors
In the Show-Me state, we tend to stay where we are raised. We often talk about the difference in perspectives between the Ozarks and St. Louis, but few of us have first-hand experience of living in both environments. Before moving to St. Louis as the Executive Director with his wife, Amanda, and pug-love, Fiona, he grew up in Kansas City and then lived and worked right here in Springfield.
Steph has left such an impact in Springfield that I rarely finish a conversation without someone asking how he is, when he plans to visit Springfield, and what his vision is for the future of equality for LGBTQ Missourians. Steph’s commitment to LGBTQ equality can’t only be measured in time. It can also be measured in the deep understanding of different areas in this state we call home.
I am constantly thankful PROMO has an Executive Director who is dedicated to this organization’s mission of statewide work because he himself has lived and worked all around our beloved state. Steph consistently affirms his commitment to PROMO’s efforts to positively impact every part of this state, and I truly believe that will be one of the main reasons we will continue to win. Please join me in celebrating Steph’s 10 year anniversary with PROMO with a gift of $10 right now.
