Today (November 20) is Transgender Remembrance Day, where we memorialize the trans lives that have been lost due to transphobia, while also continuing to raise awareness and bring attention to the discrimination that the trans community continues to endure.
In 2015 alone, over 21 trans women have lost their lives because of transphobia that continues to exist. Most of the trans women subject to violence were women of color. During Transgender Remembrance Day, we encourage you to #SayHerName, to remember the lives of women everywhere, in particular women of color, that have been lost.
This hashtag began as a response to remind people that women of color, particularly black women and girls, continue to be lost at the hands of police brutality. #SayHerName continues to raise awareness of the lives of marginalized and oppressed women as we take Transgender Remembrance Day to honor those we have lost.
