This morning, President Donald Trump put out a stream of tweets directed at transgender Americans, calling for a renewal of the ban on transgender servicemembers. But a tweet is not a policy.
There are thousands of transgender people currently serving in the military who work to keep our country safe and free, and President Trump is attempting to silence them.
President Obama’s Administration announced last year that transgender people could serve openly in the United States. This policy that President Donald Trump is putting forward is similar to President Clinton’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy” from 1993 in which gay and lesbian servicemembers were not allowed to serve in the military.
An estimated 15,000 transgender people are already honorably serving in the United States military all around the globe. These comments against our honorable servicemembers are a blatant affront to American values.
We have seen throughout history that an inclusive military is what makes an effective force, and that is still true today. We hope leadership across the US military will continue to follow the current policy that allows those who serve to serve openly with honor and integrity.
What can you do today to show the President that love FAR surpasses hate?
1. Send love and support to the trans community here. We will be populating your messages by location into a large map.
2. Become a monthly sustainer of PROMO for $5 a month to prevent harmful anti-transgender bills from being passed in the Missouri legislature in 2018 (when session starts) that further attempt to silence our community.
3. Start a Facebook fundraiser supporting PROMO and/or other Missouri transgender support or resource groups.
