Legislative Update – We Need Your Love

We planned an update highlighting the incredible people who showed up this week to testify against multiple anti-LGBTQ bills. We are still going to do that in an upcoming email, because they shared powerful, moving, personal testimony that set the tone for hearings to come.

Unfortunately, we have urgent news before we can share those beautiful stories with you. Yesterday, the Missouri Legislature announced that they were going to hold TWO MORE HEARINGS on anti-LGBTQ bills.

Missouri has never seen this many anti-LGBTQ bills move all at once. We need your help.

Over the next several days and weeks, we are going to ask a lot of you. We are going to ask you to call committees, write letters, and ask everyone you know to do the same. Right now, we are working closely with individuals and families who simply need your love and encouragement.

To be honest, these committee hearings can be hard. These hearings are meant solely to hear whether or not LGBTQ people are deserving of protections in our marriages, our schools, and in healthcare. PROMO and our partners bring together dozens of trans kiddos and their parents, doctors, attorneys, supportive legislators, and advocates to share their stories, personal experiences, and pleas for dignity. This testimony is dynamic and truly changes hearts and minds. It is also really hard.

Share your message of support for these brave folks who are showing up to be a voice for every single one of us all across Missouri.

Remind them that they are loved, special, and deserving of dignity and protections. Remind them that there is an entire world of people who are grateful they are sharing their stories today. Remind them that their stories are important and powerful.

Include your message of support today, and PROMO will share these messages with the incredible people who testify against anti-LGBTQ bills on February 25th and all throughout the legislative session.

See below for more specifics about the bills being heard on Tuesday. We will continue to update you on this unprecedented legislative session.

In gratitude,
Samati Niyomchai
Manager of Public Policy, PROMO

P.S. Please consider a gift of $15 to help PROMO defeat all 15 anti-LGBTQ bills this session.

P.P.S. Here is a breakdown of the bills scheduled for committee hearings on Tuesday, February 25th.

On Tuesday, February 25th, at 8:00am, the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education is holding a hearing on HB 1565.

HB 1565 (Basye R-47) would deem LGBTQ content in our public schools “inappropriate,” allowing for parents to sue schools for including LGBTQ speakers and curriculum without explicit permission from parents. Inclusive curriculums teach a more accurate version of history, and including LGBTQ speakers, guests, and information in schools has a positive effect on students’ self-image and overall world view.

On the same day, Tuesday, February 25th at 12:00pm, the Senate Education Committee is holding a hearing on SJR 50. The House version of this bill was already heard in committee earlier this week.

SJR50 (O’Laughlin R-18) would put the rights of transgender youth on the ballot in the 2020 election. Missourians would vote whether or not to amend our state constitution to require student athletes to participate in sports according to their sex assigned at birth. Transgender athletes participate in sports for the same reasons as everyone else — to learn good sportsmanship, get and stay healthy, be part of a team, and build a sense of belonging with their peers. Our laws should protect transgender youth, not encourage discrimination against them.
