LGBT older adults are a resilient population despite many experiencing a lifetime of discrimination and stigma.
Currently there are an estimated 2.7 million older LGBT adults across the US. With the population predicted to more than double over the next twenty years couples with older LGBT adults more likely to age alone with poorer health, SAGE of PROMO Fund strives to end the invisibility of aging members of the LGBT community.
SAGE of PROMO Fund (formally known as SAGE of Metro St. Louis) began in June 2008 as a St. Louis affiliate of national SAGENet (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Becoming the 9th SAGE to incorporate as a non-profit, SAGE of PROMO Fund began its work through out the greater St. Louis region working to bring visibility and support to older LGBT adults. SAGE of PROMO Fund educates and partners with local community organizations to ensure cultural competency, advocates on behalf of LGBT older adults and their needs, and provides socialization and community building opportunities.
Merging with PROMO (Missouri’s statewide LGBT advocacy and education organization) in mid 2015, SAGE of PROMO Fund became Missouri’s statewide SAGE affiliate. The merger allows for the core services of information and referral, community outreach/education, and advocacy to extend throughout the state. With the infrastructure and support of PROMO in place, SAGE of PROMO Fund continues to reach older LGBT Missouri’s in rural and urban communities.
